Safety Moment

Effective January 1, 2025, Scouting America introduced a new National Camp Accreditation Program standard governing the safety of bunk beds. Throughout the country, Scout camps have worked over the past year to bring their bunk beds into compliance. Specifically, guard rails are needed on both sides of the top bunk. Gaps should be 3.5 inches or smaller to prevent strangulation. Guard rails should extend at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress on the top bunk.

The Old North State properties committee retrofitted all of the bunk beds at Cherokee and Hagan to ensure they comply with this NCAP standard. The properties committee purchased new bunk beds for Hemric to meet this standard. When you are camping elsewhere, you should inspect the safety of the bunk beds in use to prevent harm to campers.
