Safety Moment: Winter Fire & Carbon Monoxide Safety: Staying Warm, Staying Safe

With the expected snow and prolonged freezing temperatures, staying warm is critical, but it must be done safely. The risks of fire and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning increase significantly during winter weather events. Review these points with your units and families.
1. No Flames in Tents, Ever
- Prohibition: Remind all Scouts, leaders, and parents that the use of any open flame, catalytic heater, or combustion device (e.g., portable gas stove, lantern, charcoal grill) is strictly forbidden inside tents.
- Risks: Tents are made of flammable materials, and the contained space allows lethal carbon monoxide to build up rapidly, often without any warning signs.
- Alternative: Plan for appropriate winter-rated sleeping bags and insulated sleeping pads to manage the cold, not internal heat sources.
2. Generator Safety During Outages
Potential power outages are a real risk. If using a home generator:
- Operate Outdoors Only: Generators must always be operated outdoors and at least 20 feet away from the house.
- Away from Openings: Ensure the generator is positioned away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.
- Install CO Alarms: Emphasize the importance of having working carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of the home, especially near sleeping areas. Test them today.
3. Safe Heating at Home
- Clear Vents: Ensure all furnace and dryer vents outside your home are clear of snow and ice to prevent dangerous CO accumulation inside.
- Space Heaters: If using a space heater, keep it at least three feet away from anything flammable (curtains, bedding, clothing). Turn them off when leaving a room or going to sleep.
