Safety Moment: Navigating Pollen & Allergy Season

The Situation

In North Carolina, spring brings rising temperatures—and the infamous “yellow coating” of pine pollen. For many Scouts and leaders, this isn’t just a nuisance; it’s the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. and can trigger serious respiratory distress or asthma attacks during outdoor activities.

Safety Points to Review

  • Check the Forecast: Before heading to a troop meeting or campout at Cherokee Scout Reservation, check the daily pollen count. Levels are typically highest in the early morning and on warm, dry, windy days.
  • Personal Health Care: Encourage Scouts to take prescribed or over-the-counter allergy medications before symptoms start. Remind them that antihistamines manage mild symptoms but cannot treat severe anaphylaxis.
  • The “Clean Scout” Method: Pollen clings to hair, skin, and clothing. After a hike or outdoor service project, Scouts should change their clothes and shower as soon as possible to avoid transferring allergens to their sleeping bags or tents.
  • Protective Gear: On high-pollen days, wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat can help shield eyes and faces from airborne particles. In extreme cases, a simple face mask can filter out a significant amount of inhaled pollen.
  • Know the Difference: Learn to distinguish between “hay fever” (itchy eyes, runny nose) and a severe reaction (shortness of breath, wheezing, or hives). Ensure every Scout’s Annual Health and Medical Record is up-to-date regarding allergy triggers and emergency treatments like Epi-Pens.

The “PAUSE” Reflection

Before starting your next outdoor activity, use the PAUSE tool:

  • Pause: Look at the environment (is the pollen visible?).
  • Assess: Does anyone in the unit have a known history of severe seasonal allergies or asthma?
  • Understand: Do we have the right medications on hand?
  • Share: Make sure all leaders know the plan if a Scout has trouble breathing.
  • Execute: Proceed with the activity safely, adjusting the intensity if needed.

A Lifetime of Service: Celebrating Larry Warlick’s Retirement from Archdale City Council

Celebrating a legacy of service that spans decades, the Old North State Council honors Councilman Larry Warlick on his retirement from the Archdale City Council.

After more than 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Archdale, Councilman Warlick officially retired on December 31, 2025. Representing Ward I, he has been a steadfast voice for progress, professionalism, and fiscal responsibility. His leadership was recently celebrated at a retirement reception held at Archdale City Hall on February 17, 2026. Prior to his service on the City Council, Warlick served three years on the Planning and Zoning Committee.

Beyond his civic duties, Larry remains a cornerstone of the Scouting family in the Old North State Council. Larry maintains his registration as an adult leader with Troop 25. During his most recent tenure on the Council Executive Board, Warlick served as the Vice-President of Properties. Warlick is known throughout Scouting America for his contributions to the Order of the Arrow, Wood Badge, and National Camping School.

We are proud of the example Larry sets for Scouts on how to continue serving their community into adulthood.

Your Scout is already talking about it. Their friends are already signed up. Don’t let them be the only one missing out on the stories they’ll be telling for the next ten years.

Round ‘Em Up!
