Safety Moment

YPT is Now SYT: Safeguarding Youth Training

Old North State Council is excited to share an important update regarding our commitment to a culture of safety. The training previously known as Youth Protection Training (YPT) has been updated and is now called Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT). This new training reflects a significant investment in our shared responsibility to foster a safe environment for all youth. It is designed to be more engaging and accessible, with an increased focus on the S.A.F.E. initiative: Supervision, Assessment, Fitness and Skill, and Equipment and Environment.

All volunteers are required to complete the new Safeguarding Youth Training by May 31, 2026. If you completed your YPT before May 22, 2025, it will be honored until this deadline. After May 31, 2026, all volunteers must have completed the new SYT. You can access the new course by logging into your My.Scouting account and clicking the Safeguarding Youth Training logo on the right side of the page.

This overhaul is more than just a name change; it introduces updated modules and policies to better equip every adult in our movement to protect and empower youth. For more details on this transition, please check out the Aaron on Scouting blog post.

Scout leaders, reel in a new adventure: Deep-sea fishing!

Scouting is all about adventure, leadership, and connection to the outdoors. While camping, hiking, and traditional fishing are cornerstones of the program, there’s a thrilling, often overlooked activity that can expand horizons for both leaders and scouts: deep-sea fishing.

Why deep-sea fishing for scout leaders?

    1. Unforgettable Experiences and Skill Development:
Deep-sea fishing offers a unique blend of excitement and practical learning. Imagine the thrill of battling a large fish in the vast ocean! This physically engaging activity helps develop coordination, patience, and resilience, skills that transfer to other aspects of life.
    2. Connecting with Nature on a Deeper Level:
The ocean is a rich ecosystem teeming with diverse marine life. Deep-sea fishing trips provide a unique opportunity to encounter this world firsthand, sparking curiosity about marine biology, conservation, and the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems.
    3. Leadership and Teamwork in Action:
Navigating the challenges of deep-sea fishing – from locating fish to adapting to changing conditions – requires teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking. These are valuable leadership skills that can be practiced and developed in a dynamic and engaging environment.
    4. Promoting Environmental Stewardship:
Engaging in deep-sea fishing can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for marine conservation. According to Voyager Fishing Charters, it teaches kids about responsible fishing practices, catch-and-release, and the importance of preserving fish populations for future generations. This helps prepare the next generation of leaders to become responsible environmental stewards.

    Getting started with deep-sea fishing

By embracing deep-sea fishing, scout leaders can offer their units an exciting new dimension of adventure and learning, helping to develop well-rounded individuals who appreciate and actively protect our natural world.

So, scout leaders, what are you waiting for? Cast a line into the deep blue and discover the adventure that awaits!

Elevate Your Unit's Program: Become a Certified Angling Instructor (CAI)!

Are you ready to cast a wider net and reel in more excitement for your Scouts? The Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) Certified Angling Instructor (CAI) program is designed to equip leaders like you with the knowledge and skills to deliver a truly exceptional fishing program to your unit.

Fishing is a beloved and classic Scouting activity, consistently ranking among the top preferred outdoor activities for Scouts. The CAI program, established in 2004, aims to empower leaders to foster that love of angling, expand fishing opportunities for youth, and even utilize fishing as a powerful tool for recruitment and retention within your unit.

Why should you become a CAI?

    1. Become a Fishing Expert: The CAI training covers everything from the basics of cane pole fishing to the intricacies of fly-fishing, including gear, knots, casting techniques, and even how to clean and cook your catch. You’ll gain the confidence to teach Scouts of all ages and skill levels.
    2. Enhance Your Unit’s Program: Imagine adding exciting fishing events to your troop or den calendar! CAI training provides the tools and knowledge to plan and execute engaging fishing programs that cater to Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, and Venturing units.
    3. Empower Scouts with Lifelong Skills: Fishing is more than just a pastime; it’s an opportunity to develop patience, observation skills, and a deeper appreciation for the outdoors. As a CAI, you’ll be instrumental in guiding Scouts toward these valuable life lessons.
    4. This adds a significant resource to your unit and helps more Scouts earn these popular awards.
    5. Contribute to Recruitment and Retention: Surveys indicate fishing is a popular activity, especially for younger youth. Offering a robust fishing program through your unit, led by a CAI, can attract new Scouts and keep existing members engaged.

What to expect in CAI training

The CAI course typically involves around 18 hours of instruction, including both classroom learning and hands-on outdoor experiences. You’ll delve into modules covering:

    • The history and importance of BSA Fishing.
