Golden Beavers: The Silent Force That Keeps Cherokee Scout Reservation Thriving
As scouts and leaders, we cherish our time at Cherokee Scout Reservation, from summer camp memories to weekend troop adventures. We all benefit from the well-maintained facilities, the safe program areas, and the new offerings that make our camping experiences so rewarding. But have you ever stopped to wonder who is behind all this incredible work? The answer lies with a dedicated and tireless group of volunteers known as the Golden Beavers.
The Golden Beavers are the unsung heroes of Cherokee Scout Reservation. This special group of volunteers, often comprised of retired Scouters, camp alumni, and committed parents, donates thousands of hours of skilled labor each year. Their work addresses the critical, and often unseen, tasks that keep the camp running safely and smoothly.
From Deferred Maintenance to Transformative Projects
The work of the Golden Beavers can be seen all over camp. While summer staff focus on programming, these volunteers tackle the long list of maintenance and repair jobs. They repair Adirondacks, stain buildings, maintain trails, and ensure that all facilities are in top shape. Much of their work involves deferred maintenance—those small issues that can become big problems if left unaddressed. By fixing leaky roofs, replacing worn-out docks, and repairing damaged equipment, the Golden Beavers save our council countless dollars and ensure the camp remains a safe and welcoming home for all.
But their contributions don’t stop there. This group of skilled craftsmen and laborers also tackles transformative projects that directly expand our program offerings. It is their work that allows us to build new program areas, upgrade facilities, and enhance the overall experience for every Scout who sets foot on camp. Their dedication to improving the camp is truly what keeps Cherokee moving forward.
A Legacy of Service
The Golden Beavers are more than just a work crew; they are a living example of the Scout Oath and Law in action. Their service is a testament to the power of volunteering and the lasting impact that a few dedicated people can have. They embody the spirit of being “helpful” and “kind” by giving their time and skills so that others can have a world-class Scouting experience.
The next time you visit Cherokee Scout Reservation, take a moment to notice the freshly stained adirondack, the sturdy handrail on a staircase, or the new bench by a trail. Remember that each of these improvements is a result of the silent, dedicated service of the Golden Beavers. We owe them our deepest gratitude for their tireless work and their unwavering commitment to keeping the spirit of Cherokee alive and well for generations to come.
